St John the Baptist is situated in the heart of the village of Pewsey. Famed for its annual carnival, Pewsey is a vibrant village with a strong sense of community. St. John’s aims to bless that community in all its activities, and has a friendly welcoming congregation of all ages with a variety of different services throughout each month.
As the largest building in the team, St. John’s is often the centre for children and youth activities including holiday clubs and fun-days. For more info visit the Youth, Children & Families page.

Caring for God's earth
At St. John’s we have an Eco group dedicated to improving our care of the land and property owned by the church for all life on earth, and to encouraging all our members to play their part in our collective lifestyles to benefit all of God’s creation. We believe this is both our duty as Christians and as citizens of the world. Click the button below to download our environmental policy document.
We are thrilled to say that in 2026, the church achieved the A Rocha ‘Eco Church Silver award’ – a scheme designed to help all churches improve their action for nature across five areas of life (see the team ‘Caring for God’s Earth’ page). It has involved the participation of all ages of the congregation from practical tasks such as wildflower bulb planting, to services under the trees and discussing carbon footprints.
Giving...
to the church (for church regulars)
Regular and one-off donations
The Parish Giving Scheme allows you to set-up 'Regular Giving' or a 'One-off Gift' very easily online. Click the 'Give now' button then choose the type of donation you'd like to make.
Just inside St. John's there is a contactless donation device for use with credit/debit cards and enabled smartphones - you can choose the amount of your donation.
Cash
Cash can still be given at a service if you wish, but don’t dread the plate coming round - if you can support the work of the church great, but if not you’re of course still welcome.
to charities
we give a portion of the church income to charities, this year we are supporting:
Christian charity based in Salisbury caring for the homeless
Christian conservation charity helping churches to care for God’s Earth
The Bible Society provides Bibles and resources globally
This local charity helps support life in Nzara and Yambio, South Sudan
St. John's - the building
The Saxon settlement of Pevisigge almost certainly had a church built of wood and thatch on the present site high above the often flooded valley.
The Normans replaced it with one of stone and the arcades of pillars and arches remain. The font is also Norman. In the 13th century the nave roof was rebuilt and a clerestory was formed and a tower was built. In 1861 the south chancel aisle (the chapel) was added and the church was filled with pews and galleries.
The greatest restoration took place in 1889-90 during the incumbency of Canon Bouverie. He carved the font cover as a memorial to the men of the parish who fell in the 1914-18 war.
